8 Trojans earn field hockey honors

Eight members of the 2016-17 Chambersburg field hockey team were named this week to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic Squad.

Five of the eight received Scholar of Distinction designation, meaning they had a grade point average of 3.9 to 4.0 for the first semester. Those Trojans included Ariana Burke, Rachel Dusman, Sydney Kegerreis, Hannah Raiines and Madison Schmus.

The other three players - Rylie Culbertson, Morgan Mentzer and Meghan Sharpe - earned National Academic Squad honors with GPAs of 3.5 to 3.8.

2 locals take 2nd in district Hoop Shoot

The South Central District Elks Hoop Shoot competition was held Jan. 29 at the Kathy Snyder Kendall Gym in McConnellsburg and two local entries, representing Chambersburg Elks Lodge #600, placed second.

In the 8-9 boys group, Brayden Ramsey of McConnellsburg connected on 20 of 25 foul shots to just fall short of West Shore's Ethan Yenser, who made 21.

Kyleigh Stoner of Mercersburg placed second in the girls 8-9 division after hitting 17 of 25 shots. Audrey Fugate of Lebanon was the deserving winner after making all 25 of her shots.

Other winners included Ava Bailor of Red Lion (10-11 girls, 17 made), Ryan Bishof of York (10-11 boys, 19), Emily Hocker of Columbia/Middletown (12-13 girls, 19) and Chase Morris of Red Lion (12-13 boys, 23).

Other area participants in districts included Grace Egli of Mercersburg (10-11 girls, 4th with 10); Wade Appleby of Willow Hill (10-11 boys, 3rd with 17); Essence Robinson of McConnellsburg (12-13 girls, 3rd with 13); and Luke Coffman of Spring Run (12-13 boys, 4th with 18).
