Ex-PIAA champs Marsteller, Sponseller win wrestling titles


Two former PIAA wrestling champions won titles at the Lock Haven Mat-Town Open over the weekend.

Kennard-Dale graduate and four-time state champ Chance Marsteller won at 174 pounds, and former Bermudian Springs wrestler Tristan Sponseller won at 197 pounds.

Marsteller picked up a pair of falls, a medical forfeit and a major decision to win the title. He opened with a fall in 3:14 and picked up a medical forfeit victory to reach the semifinals, where Marsteller knocked off Virginia's Fox Baldwin with a fall in 44 seconds. In the final, Marsteller earned a 13-3 major decision against Lock Haven's Tyler Wood to win the title.

Marsteller was wrestling unattached for Pride Wrestling. He was kicked off the Lock Haven wrestling team after he was charged with aggravated assault and other charges after police allege he kicked, bit and spat at police officers after being taken into custody near Lock Haven University on Aug. 25.

Meanwhile, Lock Haven sophomore Sponseller picked up three victories to win his title. The Bermudian Springs graduate opened with a fall in 1:57 in the first round before a 13-6 decision in the semifinals. In the final, he knocked off Rutgers' Kevin Mulligan with a fall in 1:14.
