Three YAIAA grads earn all-star nods at York College

Three YAIAA alumni were among five York College players who earned All-Capital Athletic Conference honors on Wednesday.

Dover's Maxine Herman and Red Lion's Emily Chambers were named to the women's soccer All-CAC team. And Susquehannock's Nathan Bilbie was honored on the men's team.

Herman and Chambers both earned second-team All-CAC honors for the Spartans.

Herman, a junior forward, led the Spartans in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and one assist. Herman scored a team-high three game-winning goals and finished the season tied for third in the CAC in goals scored.

"Max had a really good season for us," head coach Vicki Sterner said in a news release. "She provided us with a goal scoring presence that enabled us to play well in the offensive third. She had a great second half which allowed us to go on a run at the end of the year."

Chambers, a senior, anchored a defense that posted four shutouts and three other games in which the Spartans allowed just one goal. Chambers recorded one goal for the year as she scored in the October 15 win at Southern Virginia.

"Emily was a steadying force on defense for us this season," Sterner said. "Her composure on the ball and ability to put herself in the right spot was a key to our defense during the season. Her leadership on the field was a key to our success this year."

On the men's side, Bilbie earned a second-team nod. Junior defender Ryan Ockford earned a first-team nod, while senior forward Matt Freibaum joined Bilbie on the second team.

Bilbie finished his first year with the Spartans with 12 points on six goals and two game-winning goals.

"Nathan gave us a dangerous presence in the middle of the field," head coach Evan Scheffey said in a news release. "His ability to create scoring chances and his ability to finish proved to be an important part of our success this year. I think, with a year in our system under his belt, he can be really dangerous player for us next fall."

Ockford totaled 12 points on six goals, including a 4-for-5 performance in penalty kicks. He also anchored a defense that posted five shutouts for the year. York had another seven games in which they allowed just one goal.

Freibaum closed out his senior year with a team-leading 17 points on five goals and seven assists. He recorded one game-winning goal and was 1-for-1 in penalty kicks.
