Eastern grad Reichard sets up Georgia Southern volleyball

Sophomore Lauren Reichard has settled in as a starter with the Georgia Southern women’s volleyball team.

The 6-foot middle hitter has played in 92 of 93 sets to help the Eagles get to 12-12 overall and 4-4 in the Sun Belt Conference after a 3-1 victory against Savannah State last week in Savannah, Ga. The Eastern York grad is first on the team in blocks (101) and solo blocks (23) and she’s third in kills (188) with 14 service aces. She has a .258 hitting percentage and has scored 264.0 points.

“Lauren has matured pretty nicely,” coach Dustin Wood said. “I think she understands the finer details of the game.”

The coaching staff made some changes in Reichard’s arm swing.

“I think that’s definitely helping her,” Wood said.  “The game is slowing down for her, but there is a lot more for her to learn so the upside on her is that any given night she has the ability to change a match.”

Reichard did just that in a 3-2 league victory against Troy on Oct. 14, when she had 13 kills and eight blocks with a .355 attack percentage and a team-high 18.5 points.

“Lauren put the team on her back in that match,” Wood said. “We’re excited to see what she can do for us in the future.”

Alexis Young (Central York)

The sophomore leads the Stevenson field hockey team with six goals and three assists for 15 points. The Kutztown women’s volleyball is just 4-18 overall and 1-10 in PSAC play but the 6-foot senior middle hitter is wrapping up her career in fine style. She leads the Golden Bears in blocks (50) and is third in kills (130) and points scored (159.0), and she has started all 22 matches and all 84 sets. Zielinski currently has 423 kills, 265 blocks and 595.5 points in 103 career matches and 345 career sets with three matches left on the schedule.

Alesha Herman (Susquehannock)

The junior forward is the top scorer on the Seton Hill field hockey team, which is suffering through a 2-14 season with a 0-8 mark in PSAC play. Kern was an All-Colonial Athletic Association third-team pick as a sophomore and is a candidate for first-team honors this season. The Blue Hens host Towson in a homecoming game Saturday in Newark, Del.

Luke Nelson (Dallastown)

The sophomore midfielder was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his play with the Penn State-Altoona men’s soccer team. He was a key performer last week when the Lions won a pair of AMCC games. He had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory against Franciscan on Oct. 19, and he scored the winning goal in a 3-1 victory against D’Youville Saturday. Nelson has six goals and eight assists for 20 points to help the Lions to a 10-6-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 mark in the AMCC.

Lauren Fink (West York)

The 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter and sophomore middle hitter Cheyenne Altand (Delone Catholic) form a solid one-two punch for the Lycoming women’s volleyball team. She had a season-high 13 saves in a 2-1 loss to Indiana in a PSAC game last Sunday that dropped The Rock to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in league play. Junior Alyssa Castle (Red Lion) is a defender on the squad and has played in 14 games with one start.

Ian Patmore (Red Lion)

The freshman has played in 15 games with 12 starts for the DeSales men’s soccer team which stands 9-6-2 overall and 4-2-0 in MAC Freedom play. The Bulldogs clinched a playoff berth with a 1-0 victory against Wilkes last Saturday. Patmore has helped the defense limit foes to 18 goals with six shutouts. DeSales is in a three-way tie for second in the standings and closes its season against Eastern on Saturday. A victory would give the Bulldogs the second seed.

Tanner Martin (York Suburban)

The senior has scored five goals on the season, including a game-winner for the Virginia Wesleyan men’s soccer team. The 5-foot-9 forward had both goals in a 2-1 victory against Hampden-Sydney on Oct. 12. He also scored in a 1-1 tie with Guilford last Saturday that pushed the Marlins to 6-5-4 overall and 2-2-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Martin has 10 goals and four assists good for 24 points in 60 games with 47 starts in his career.
