York County charity tennis event draws renowned player

Former top 20 tennis player Alexandra Stevenson, a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist, will lead a clinic at Country Club of York next week before participating in a charity tennis tournament benefiting the Cancer Help Fund.

Stevenson headlines the Apartment Gallery Cancer Awareness Mixed Doubles Invitational, set for July 23-24 at Country Club of York.

With a tournament field that also includes NCAA Division I players and others who have been nationally ranked, organizer Mark Koons said he expects the tournament to bring the highest caliber tennis that York County has ever seen.

Stevenson's clinic will be July 22, the day before the mixed doubles tournament. Stevenson will share her story with fans and will then lead a clinic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The clinic costs $100.

Stevenson, 35, turned pro in 1999. That year, she reached the Wimbledon semifinals, falling to eventual champion Lindsey Davenport. Her best season came in 2002, when she was ranked No. 18 in the world.

The tournament on July 23-24 will be free to watch, and there will be a refreshment tent available for a $20 ticket.

A limited number of teams are still being accepted for the tournament, which offers a $2,000 prize. Registration costs $100, with proceeds benefiting the Cancer Help Fund.
