Suspensions handed down in Legion shoe incident

One coach and one player were suspended following controversy over the footwear worn by C.J. Czerwinski during Thursday's American Legion playoff game between Red Lion and Hanover.

Czerwinski, a Red Lion player who wore metal cleats before umpires asked him to change in the fourth inning, was suspended for one game, as was Red Lion coach Bret Stabley. Metal cleats are not allowed on Red Lion's artificial-turf Horn Field.

“This whole thing has been looked at by many people," York/Adams County American Legion Baseball League President Gene Ness said. "The conclusion is that the coach will sit out a game and the player will sit out a game.”

Czerwinski pitched five innings, allowing zero runs on just one hit and striking out nine, in Red Lion's 7-6 victory. Discussion between umpires, and coaches from both teams, delayed the game twice.

Red Lion visits Pleasureville in the second round of the tournament at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
