Olympic swimming: West York teen falls short in prelims

West York's Courtney Harnish posted the 13th-fastest time in the 400-meter freestyle preliminaries but didn't qualify for the finals at Monday's U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

The top eight finishers advanced to Monday night's finals, with two alternates.

Harnish finished in 4 minutes, 11.44 seconds, which is .92 seconds off the pace of the eighth qualifier for the final.

Harnish planned to compete in five events at the trials. Her 11th-fastest seed time in the 400 freestyle was her highest-ranked event entering the trials.

Spring Grove's Hali Flickinger also qualified for the trials in that event but did not swim in Monday's prelims. She is scheduled to swim in the 100-meter butterfly final Monday night.

In other local action in Monday's early session:

  • Dallastown's Kacey Oberlander was 136th in the 100-meter backstroke preliminaries (1:04.64)
  • York Suburban's Coleman Stewart was 135th in the 100-meter backstroke preliminaries (57.57)
