Dallastown grad at Penn State dies in crash in Centre County

A former Dallastown student who was attending Penn State died Friday in a crash that occurred in Centre County, according to a release from the Ferguson Township Police Department.

Byron L. Markle, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash that occurred at 4:28 p.m. on Friday, according to the release.

Markle, a 2014 Dallastown High School graduate, was a three-year starter for the Wildcats' boys' golf team. Dallastown won the YAIAA Division 1 Championship in Markle's sophomore and senior years.

In an email sent by boys' varsity golf coach Brooke Shoffner to former and current members of the team on Saturday morning, Shoffner wrote, "Byron touched our lives not only as a fine golfer, but more importantly as an exceptional young man. The tragic loss of Byron at such a young age breaks our hearts."

Shoffner also said, "It was my pleasure as golf coach to watch him mature, not only as a golfer, but more importantly as a confident young man of fine character."

Police say Markle was a passenger in the one-vehicle crash involving a Nissan Pathfinder SUV; the driver — Tyler Fasig of Leesport, PA, — was not injured.

The release states that police believe alcohol might have contributed to the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.
