Former South Western wrestler commits to Cornell

In the two years since he transferred from South Western to Malvern Prep, Seth Janney hasn't stopped dominating on the wrestling mat.

One of the top high school heavyweights in the entire country, the former Mustang and current Hanover resident has accepted a wrestling scholarship to Cornell University. He plans to redshirt the next season but could compete for a starting spot in 2018-19.

While Janney was sought after by a number of Division I schools including Stanford, Virginia and Harvard, he said Cornell's combination of academics and wrestling success made the school his top choice. Cornell finished eighth in team points at this year's NCAA Wrestling Championships and has produced five individual national champions since 2012.

"They have an established program that wins year after year," Janney said. "I'm excited to be a part of that. The national champions they've had, they weren't the top guys coming out of high school. They bring the best of your potential out of you. Obviously they are where they are for a reason."

As a sophomore at South Western in 2015, Janney finished second in PIAA Class 3A at 220 pounds and was named GameTimePA.com York-Adams Wrestler of the Year. He transferred to Malvern that fall to continue his football and wrestling careers.

In his two years at Malvern, Janney won consecutive heavyweight titles at the National Preps Championships, which Malvern competes at instead of the PIAA tournament. He finished his career with 163 wins, 124 pins and is currently ranked 10th in the country among high school heavyweights, according to InterMat Wrestling.

Janney is planning to major in business at Cornell. He said he thinks the level of competition he faced while at Malvern will help prepare him for Division I wrestling.

"We have some really tough guys (at Malvern) and some coaches who are heavy that I wrestle everyday," Janney said. "The coaches at Cornell told me I'll have a lot of top training partners, and they like my style."
