Wolfgram continues strong start at Central

Central York's Michael Wolfgram is enjoying a successful sophomore season on the wrestling mat.

The Panthers' 285-pounder ran his season record to 12-0 with nine falls after his win at the Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic. He adds that championship to two others he won earlier this year — the Brandywine Heights Bullet Invitational and the Penn Manor tournament.

Over the holiday break, Central York took the drive east to Lancaster County where Wolfgram won all four of his matches over the two-day tournament. The first two came via fall in 1:50 and 5:14 with his semifinal victory, a 5-2 decision over Avon Grove's Josh Walls.

Power rankings: 3 new teams enter top-five

In the final, Wolfgram ran into Exeter Township's Oscar Daniels, the District 3 runner-up at 285 pounds last year. Wolfgram scored early and often, picking up a 14-1 major decision.

The victory was significant for the sophomore, as he came into the match ranked 12th in the state by PA Power Wrestling, while Daniels was ranked No. 8.

Here is a look at other YAIAA highlights from the past week:

Around the mats

Dalton Daugherty, Dallastown: The Wildcats' junior qualified for the District 3 tournament last year and even won a pair of bouts, but what he's done so far in his junior campaign may be even more impressive. Daugherty started the season with a win at the Solanco Mule Classic as a No. 5-seed and then added a win this past week at the Governor Mifflin holiday tournament. Daugherty ripped off two decisions and a major decision to reach the title match, where he escaped with a 2-1 win over Neshaminy's Jackson Erb.

Matthew Rodriguez, Dover: The Eagles' junior won the 106-pound championship at the Governor Mifflin holiday tournament with a 15-6 major decision over Dallastown's Cael Turnbull in the final. Rodriguez also picked up a first period fall and an 11-7 decision to reach the finals.

Dallastown wrestling: The Wildcats spent their holiday break at the Governor Mifflin tournament and came away with a champion, three runner-up finishes and three fifth-place finishes to come in second second behind the host Mustangs in the team race. Governor Mifflin closed with 178.50 points while the Wildcats had 158 points.

Locals fare well at Trojan Wars: Northeastern took home two top-three medals from the Trojan Wars at Chambersburg, highlighted by returning District 3 285-pound champion Blaine Yinger. The senior heavyweight dropped a 6-4 decision in the championship to Shippensburg's Cameron Tinner. Standout freshman Cole Wilson finished third in the stacked 113-pound field, knocking off Gettysburg's Luke Sainto, 6-0, in the third place match. The 113-pound field featured returning PIAA Class 2A runner-up in Southern Columbia's Jaret Lane.

Zurich Storm, New Oxford: The Colonial senior didn't win a championship at the Conestoga Valley Holiday Classic, but he did impress in a loaded 120-pound field. Storm won his first match with a fall in 50 seconds before punching his semifinal ticket with an 18-3 tech fall win in 3:33. In the semifinals he knocked off Owen J. Roberts' Luke Resnick, 3-1, before falling 3-2 to Central Mountain's Geo Barzona, a returning PIAA Class 3A state medalist.
