Bermudian Springs to host 'Pins for the Twins'

Jarod Miller hopes to turn the Bermudian Springs High School gym green on Jan. 27.

It's something Miller, one of the team's captains and the starting 138-pounder, has wanted to do since his sophomore year.

Green is the color associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy awareness. It's also the favorite color of Miller's close family friends, Dayton and Blake Biesecker, twins who were born with the disease and turn 10 years old next week.

“I’ve done walks at the Giant Center for muscular dystrophy, and Gettysburg College did a game dedicated to raising awareness," Miller said. "I thought those ideas were pretty cool, so why not dedicate a wrestling match to them and try to get the gym green-ed out?”

For his senior project, Miller arranged a fundraiser called "Pins for the Twins" to be held on the night of the Eagles home match against Hanover. The team will wear green for that meet, and he is selling green shirts that read "Pins for the Twins" on the front and "Wrestling for a Cure" on the back. The shirts cost $10, with $5 from each shirt going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to help with the organization's effort to find a cure.

“We’re very involved in MDA, they’ve been a great organization for us," said Nicki Biesecker, the twins' mother. "The boys are able to go to camp and do a lot of things through MDA.”

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which primarily affects boys, causes muscle weakness and can affect the heart and respiratory muscles. Those with this type of muscular dystrophy typically do not live past their 30s.

“I did a research project on it and I learned about their specific type of muscular dystrophy," Miller said. "I learned how it would affect their whole lives and that their life spans are cut short. I’m trying to give them something to remember for the rest of their lives.”

“This senior project is going to mean a lot to me and I hope it turns out really well. They’re really close family friends of ours and I want to put a smile on their face.”
