Bonus points boost Bermudian past Dallastown

Bermudian Springs steadily racked up enough victories and bonus points in the middle of Wednesday's dual meet at Dallastown to score 29 straight points and win 35-25.

Trailing 9-6 after four matches, Bermudian Springs junior 126-pounder Austin Clabaugh gave the Eagles the lead for good with a 12-3 major decision against Dalton Daugherty. Brady Sanders and Jarod Miller followed with pins to extend the lead, and Ashton West and Lucas Gladfelter later added more bonus points with a major decision and pin, respectively.

“We knew coming in we were gonna need bonus points," Bermudian Springs coach Dave McCollum said. "I didn’t say much to the team about it because once you start saying, ‘we need six here, six there,’ it never happens. So I just said, ‘let’s go wrestle tonight and see what happens.’”

Gladfelter, whose pin put the Eagles up 35-9 with four matches left to effectively secure the victory, came in his return to the mat after missing the last month with a stretched medial collateral ligament in his knee. He pinned Matt Ross, who started at 160 pounds since Dallastown chose to gamble and bump Drake Pew up to 170 pounds.

“We knew coming in we’d have to win some close ones," Dallastown coach Rob Jansen said. "We moved the lineup around to try and get a couple but it didn’t quite work out the way we thought it would.”

Prior to the Eagles slew of bonus points, Dallastown 120-pounder Gerald MacDonald pulled off the most dramatic victory of the night. MacDonald trailed 6-2 late in the third period before reversing Dylan Griffie and nearly pinning him to earn two near fall points as time expired and tie the match. Neither MacDonald nor Griffie scored in the first two overtime periods, and MacDonald earned the victory with a ride-out in the ultimate tiebreaker.

Dallastown earned two more overtime victories later on in the dual, starting with Drake Pew taking down 2015 state qualifier Noah Fleshman and earning three near fall points in the extra period of the 170-pound match. In the final match of the night, Jack Marks outlasted Logan Luckenbaugh in a match that went to overtime tied 1-1 but ended with Marks winning 6-4 in double-overtime.

“We won all the overtime matches tonight," Jansen said. "Our guys looked pretty well conditioned. I tell them to always be ready for those, and when we do matches in practice we do overtime bouts most of the time.”

Cameron Green and Bryce Shields both scored technical falls for Dallastown to narrow the final margin.
