Spring Grove blitzes West York

Wrestling victory comes on "Take Down Cancer Night" at the school

Wearing special singlets and shirts for the occasion, Spring Grove carried on its "Take Down Cancer Night" tradition by beating West York 67-4 to win for the sixth straight year of the fundraiser event.

A donation of $20,000 raised by the school and surrounding community for the Heather Baker Foundation was revealed before the match. The foundation, named for a Paradise Elementary School teacher who died in 2010 after a fight with breast cancer, distributes money to families in the area who need financial support to help in their battles against cancer.

One of the most exciting wins of the night came from Rockets freshman 106-pounder Clay Baker, the nephew of Heather Baker, who is off to a 10-1 start this season. Baker, who won a U.S. Air Force Indian Classic title in Kingsport, Tenn. two weekends ago, beat West York sophomore Nathan Townsley.

“Clay keeps getting better," Spring Grove coach Tony Miller said. "He works hard. He’s worked at it a long time.”

Baker pinned Townsley, an 18-match winner last year, just before time expired in the first period. He gave his coaches emphatic high fives as he returned to the Spring Grove bench.

“I was especially happy that I won because of my aunt," Clay Baker said. "My cousin (Trey) just came home from the Air Force to watch me too.”

Trey Baker is a former Spring Grove wrestler and the son of Heather Baker.

“Wrestling’s a big part of our family," said Donald Baker III, Trey's father and Clay's uncle. "It’s really cool to see my nephews and my kids wrestling in the program and the whole community giving back to the foundation.”

His other nephew, junior 152-pounder Trent Baker, won his match by forfeit. The Rockets got pins from Ryan Daugherty (170 pounds), Josh Cribbs (195), Andrew Lawson (285), Chance Jackson (120) and Anthony Hinson (132) in the victory.

West York's only win came at 145 pounds by Sam Sterner, who beat Kyle Zumbrum 11-0.

“This night was about something bigger than winning," Miller said. "Win or lose tonight, there are some families that are winners that we could give some money to."
