South Western’s Derek Wilson, who finished fifth in the state at 120 pounds a year ago, started his senior season with a bang, winning the prestigious Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport on Saturday. Wilson defeated Bald Eagle’s Garrett Rigg, 3-2, in the final.

Teammate Owen Wherley also took home a championship. Wherley, who wrestled at 126 last season, won the 145-pound title, pinning Muncy’s Noah Gush in 1:18. With his efforts, Wherley took home outstanding wrestler honors in after his third Top Hat title of his career. Another teammate, Gage Thomas finished as the runner-up at 160 pounds, dropping a 5-3 decision to Jersey Shore’s Hadyn Swartwood.

As a team, the Mustangs finished sixth with 134 points. Jersey Shore won the team title with 201 points. Red Lion finished 14th with 60.5 points led by 285-pounder Jared Schell, who finished second after a 4-2 loss to Bald Eagle’s Josh Fye.

Wrestling

Cumberland Valley Kickoff Classic: Dover’s Brandon Rodriguez finished third at 113 pounds, reaching the semifinals and then beating Boiling Springs’ Kollin Myers in the third-place match. On Friday, Rodriguez beat Northern’s Luke Molsky in the first round before defeating Cumberland Valley’s Russell Zimmerman, 7-2, in the quarterfinals. Rodriguez fell, 5-1 to Canon-McMillan’s Logan Macri in the semifinal before rebounding to beat Spring-Ford’s Brandon Meredith in the consolation semifinals.

Ephrata Duals: Biglerville finished third at the Ephrata Duals with a 41-39 win against Garden Spot. Before the placing round, Biglerville defeated Reading (38-27) and Ephrata (54-14), while losing to Downingtown East (50-20) and Mifflin County (46-15).

Scott Cooper (152), Nate Newberry (160), Victor Lopez (220) each went 4-1 on the day, their only losses each coming at the hands of Mifflin County wrestlers.

Brandywine Heights Bullet Invitational: Central York’s Dylan Chatterton (145) and Michael Wolfgram (285) each won titles to lead the Panthers to a second-place finish at the Brandywine Heights Bullet Invitational.

Chatterton, now a senior, picked up a first-round fall in 35 seconds then picked up a 16-3 win the in the semis before winning the title with a fall in 2:19 over Daniel Boone’s Joey Yohn.

Wolfgram, a freshman, recorded a fall in 4:46, a 3-1 decision and a 6-2 decision over Brandywine Height’s Michael Hubble in the final to take the championship.

York Suburban’s Colin Shelton finished as the runner-up at 120 pounds after being pinned in 1:28 by Central Dauphin’s Jake Cherry, one of the Rams eight champions.

Also finishing second were a trio of Panthers: Xavier Musti (132), Zach Emswiler (170) and Isaiah Dickson (182).

Solanco Mule Classic: Spring Grove’s Dalton Rohrbaugh (113), and Marcus Kehr (160) won titles at the Solanco Mule Classic.

Rohrbaugh won the title with three pins, including a fall in 3:20 over John Carroll’s Luke Strappelli in the championship bout. Kehr, meanwhile, recorded three falls and a decision to win the 160-pound crown, the final, a fall in 3:47 over Solanco’s Kody Hart.

Tanner Sterner (145), Josh Cribbs (195) and Andrew Lawson (285) all finished as runner-ups.

The five wrestlers helped the Rockets win the team title with 203.5 points, 11.5 ahead of host Solanco. Delone Catholic finished fifth with 135 points.

The Squires Brian Shermeyer finished third at 160 pounds and teammate Brady Repasky (182) also finished third.
