Central York's Sommer punches ticket to state championships

Central York’s Garrett Sommer, is headed back to the PIAA Class 3A boys' diving championships following his performance at the District 3 diving championships Saturday at Wilson High School.

Sommer scored 434.25 points to place fourth in the boys’ competition. Hershey’s Jake Hedrick won with a score of 551.10.

Hedrick, who finished second at the 2016 state meet, battled Chambersburg’s Nick Cover throughout Saturday’s competition. Cover placed second with 523.80 points.

Nicholas Tomczyk (471.35) of Exeter took third and Wilson’s Bryce Johnston (427.55) rounded out the top five, all of whom qualified for states.

On the girls’ side, Northeastern’s Lauren Williamson, who placed second at the YAIAA championships, earned a seventh-place medal with her score of 365.55.

The Central York duo of Kirsten Taylor (289.55) and Zoe Mendlowitz (189.55) finished 16th and 18th respectively.

Mary Warker of Wilson took top honors with 468.25 points, with Hershey’s Meredith Gould (432.05) taking second.

Carlisle’s Lauran McIlhenny (411.20), Wilson's Caitlyn Christopher (390.70) and Elizabethtown freshman Kierstan Lentz (377.05) all qualified for states after placing third through fifth.

The girls’ PIAA championships will be held March 17 and the boys' championships will be March 18 at Bucknell University.
