York Suburban swim teams sweep Dover

After watching teammates being honored the three previous years, York Suburban’s Jenna Hufnagle finally got to experience her own senior night on Thursday when the Trojan swimmers hosted Dover.

“It was actually really terrifying, yet so much fun at the same time,” she said. “When I thought about it, this was my last home meet. It’s the end of a chapter. But on the brighter side there’s so much more to look forward to team-wise and individually for myself and swimming in college.”

Hufnagle did her part in the water, swimming on two winning relays and taking the 100-yard butterfly to help lead the Trojan girls to a 65-29 defeat of the Eagles.

York Suburban was also victorious on the boys’ side, 64-30.

Despite the scoring difference, the girls’ meet was the closer one early. Dover pulled to within 20-14 after Grace Beierschmitt won the 50 freestyle, the first of her two individual wins. However, Hufnagle’s fly, along with a second-place finish from teammate Maddy Abel stretched the Trojans’ lead to 27-15.

“I just wanted to make my last home meet amazing,” Hufnagle said.

Dover’s Lindsay Brenneman won her second event of the night — the 500 free — but Suburban held even with second- and third-place finishes. That depth was key all night as the Trojans took first and second in the 200 free relay and swept the top spots in the next two events.

Abel won the 100 backstroke and despite fighting illness, Megan Hunt earned her second individual win in the 100 breaststroke.

The Suburban boys’ team remained unbeaten (4-0) in the league while earning at least a tie for the Division II title. The Trojans won every race but one and improved to 7-0 overall.

Suburban’s depth showed as no swimmer won more than one individual event. Taking first and second in the 200 individual medley, a race won by Trent Golden, helped Suburban open a 19-7 lead. Later, the meet was wrapped up by taking the top two spots in the 100 backstroke, won by Raven Frank-Alwine.

“Even though a couple of us were down sick, we were still together and that’s the important thing,” said senior Karl Schmittle, who won the boys’ 100 butterfly. “We still stood up and gave it our all. We had a lot of good swims today.”

Dover’s Drew MacDonald earned the Eagle boys only race win when he placed first in the 100 breaststroke.

The Trojan girls are 4-0 in Division II and 5-2 overall, heading to next week’s showdown at West York.
