Stoner sets pool record as Dallastown sweeps

Dallastown senior Jacob Stoner had his eye on the record board inside the Wildcats’ natatorium for some time, especially the 100-yard butterfly entry.

"That was what I was thinking about coming into this season," he said. "I was thinking every home meet, I have got to give a shot at that pool record. We only have five or six home meets so I only had five or six chances."

With Central York in town for Thursday’s YAIAA Division I dual meet, Stoner showed that setting a goal can pay off.

Stoner’s 100 fly time of 51.04 set a pool record, eclipsing a mark set in 2008 by former York Suburban champion Harry Foster (51.78).

It was just one of many things that went well for Dallastown, which swept both the boys and girls meets against the Panthers. The boys (123-47) and girls (117-53) both dominated in their victories.

While he really didn’t know who Foster was, Stoner did listen closely to a coach’s advice.

"That was so special," said Stoner, who also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.32. “I was talking to Mr. (Dallastown assistant Chris) Brockway and he said you’ve got to come out fast if you want to have a shot at that record. I was thinking about that on the blocks."

Stoner was one of two Wildcat boys to win two individual and two relays events. Logan Brockway teamed with Stoner on the 200 medley and 400 free relays, plus won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Dallastown jumped out early by taking first and second place in the 200 free, 50 free and 100 butterfly. The Wildcats followed the fly by sweeping the 100 free behind Seth Schuler, William Wise and William Cornish, opening an insurmountable 70-24 lead with five events remaining.

The girls meet was nearly as one-sided as Jena Woods won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and Morgan Merrifield took the 50 free and 100 free. Both were also a leg of the winning medley and 200 free relays.

The Wildcats swept the top three spots in girls’ IM, behind Woods, Sydney Hoover and Isabella Wise for an early 31-15 lead.  Later, Woods, Araby Marston and Wise did the same in the 100 breast.

Central’s lone victories came from Kayla Swaltek in the girls’ 200 free along with Patrick O’Neill (500 free) and Lucas Tate (breaststroke) on the boys’ side.
