Cover, McIlhenny win South Western diving titles

HANOVER - Chambersburg diver Nick Cover out-distanced the competition Saturday, beating his closest competitor by 143 points at the South Western Diving Invitational.

Cover totaled 504.75 points after 11 dives. His toughest dive came on his 10th attempt — a back dive with one somersault and 2 1/2 twists with a 2.7 degree of difficulty.

Trojan coach Ryan Crider said, "Nick came in focused, and he elected to change one of his dives today so he could put his program to the test. He's always looking to add to his repertoire and challenge himself. He dove strong for all 11 dives and his score was his best-ever for an 11-dive meet, beating his pool record from this meet last year."

Runner-up Garrett Sommer of Central York finished with 361.15 points, and Northeastern's Josh Freeze rounded out the top three with a score of 341.05.

Carlisle's Laura McIlhenny took top honors in the girls' competition with a score of 468.10. The race for first was tight after 10 dives with Hempfield's Paige Schoelkopf and Northeastern's Lindsey Pope each about seven points behind McIlhenny. McIlhenny's final dive  — a reverse 1 1/2 somersault with half a twist  — earned her 8.0 marks from all three judges and sealed the win.

Pope placed third with a score of 442.10, less than four points behind Schoelkopf's second-place finish.
