Devaney, Gross power Suburban girls in pool

Madie Devaney and her York Suburban girls’ swimming teammates knew they'd have some catching up to do Thursday when the Trojans swam at Central York.

Their coaches Craig Brennan and Dick Guyer told them that because the Panthers had two divers competing, Suburban would trail the YAIAA crossover meet before any swimmer climbed the starting blocks.

The Trojan girls listened, and it took only two events for them to take the lead, and they weren’t about to relinquish it.

Devaney and teammate Carson Gross each won two events and swam on a pair of winning relays, and the Suburban girls marched to a 100-80 victory.

“They were telling us it was going to be close and the motivation factor was there,” Devaney said. “Everybody picked it up and said we are going to do it together. Every single race had to be 110 (percent), and our girls really, really did pull together.”

“I knew it was going to be a close meet,” Brennan said. “We just knew that we had to chip away in every race, just to move up just a little bit each race.”

After the Trojans took first and third in the 200 medley relay, Gross won the second event, the 200-yard freestyle, by more than 12 seconds. Combined with Alexis Bowen's second-place finish, that put Suburban ahead to stay.

Jenna Hufnagle won the 200 individual medley, Devaney the 50 and 100 free, plus Gross and Bowen went 1-2 in the 500 free. Keelie Walker took the 100 breaststroke.

“It shows the heart of our entire team when you see Jenna in a close race, the way she finished and not even having enough power to get out of the pool,” Brennan said. “That was a microcosm of what the girls team is developing into.”

Sarah Spinney scored a pair of events for Central, taking the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Emily Salter captured the diving.

Pair of records leads Central  boys

Garrett Sommer started the evening by setting a Panthers’ record with his score of 210.75 in the diving competition. Later in the meet, teammate Alec Peckmann broke his fifth individual school record with his time of 54.02 in the 100 backstroke.

Those were just two of several outstanding swims for Central, which won the boys’ competition, 113-70.

“I am swimming hard for the team," said Peckmann, who also won the 100 butterfly. “My goals are still where they were at the beginning of the season. Breaking records is nice, but I have more team-oriented goals than individual goals this season.”

Ben Chu (200 IM), Will Hartzell (100 free), Alex Forry (500 free) and Jesse Tate (100 breast) also won events for the Panthers.

“I thought our team did really well this meet. I saw a lot of good times from everybody,” Peckmann said. “There was a lot of improvements from last week, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement as there always is.”

Karl Schmittle (200 free) and Aiden Fryar (50 free) notched victories for the Trojans, who held their own in the meet, including in the 200 free relay they won by only .11 seconds.
