A look ahead: York's week of May 2

The YAIAA sports scene is heating up as the regular season draws to a close. Lacrosse is down to its final week, and there will be plenty of games to watch that have importance in the standings.

The league tennis tournament is under way, and baseball and softball aren’t short of must-see matchups. Here are a few games YAIAA fans should keep their eye on.

Boys' lacrosse

York Catholic at Central York, 7 p.m. Tuesday: This will be a big game for both sides as the league standings feature a bit of a log jam. The Panthers are tied with Red Lion and Susquehannock with an 8-2 divisional record. A win for Central clinches at least a share of the regular-season title. The Fighting Irish are just outside the chaos with a 7-2 record, so a win for them could make a chaotic situation in the standings that much more chaotic. In short, there will plenty on the line when the Panthers and Irish hit the field.

Girls' lacrosse

Susquehannock at Kennard-Dale, 7 p.m. Thursday: The final regular-season game for Susquehannock and Kennard-Dale could very well serve as a playoff preview. The Warriors and Rams open the week in the second and third spots in the league. Despite losing the nation’s leading scorer, Morgan Day, the Rams have not seen a drop off in offensive production thanks in part to her younger sister Maddie. Both sides will be looking to end the regular season on a winning note, but Susquehannock might have some extra motivation from last season, when the Warriors fell to the Rams in the YAIAA championship game, 14-11.

Tennis

YAIAA singles championships, 4 p.m. Monday at South Western: Holden Koons has made a mark in his freshman year for Dallastown and will face Ben Sentz of South Western for the Class AAA title. It will be an all-York Catholic match in the Class AA championship match as No. 1 seed Michael Andrews will battle teammate and No. 4 seed Alberto Bruno.

YAIAA doubles tournament 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at South Western and Red Lion: If fans haven't gotten their fill of tennis action already, the league’s doubles tournament is another good option. Certainly not shy of any talent either, fans will see some of the top doubles pairings. There will plenty of familiar faces with Andrews, Koons, Sentz, Gavin Kenny and others also taking part in the doubles tournament.

Baseball

Gettysburg at Littlestown, 4:15 p.m. Monday: Gettysburg has been on a roll this season. Before Friday’s loss to Eastern York, the Warriors had won eight straight games to turn their season around from an 0-4 start. The Warriors now sit in second in Division III. There is a bit of a log jam in the Division III standings, so Monday’s divisional contest will be important to both teams. Littlestown is tied with York Suburban, a team they will see later in the week, at 7-3. So the Thunderbolts will be hungry for a win before they face Suburban.

Spring Grove at Dallastown, 4:15 p.m. Monday: Another big divisional matchup on the calendar is the Rockets meeting with the Wildcats. The Rockets sit in second place in Division I with a 7-3 divisional record, while Dallastown is first at 9-1 in division play. Spring Grove has been without pitcher Matt Brooks, who has been their star ace this season, but they will be coming off a 6-4 win over Susquehannock. Dallastown recently defeated South Western, 11-0.

Softball

Kennard-Dale at Littlestown, 4:15 p.m. Monday: The Thunderbolts are the top dogs in Division III softball and remain undefeated in division play this season. They’ll be looking to keep it that way when second-place Kennard-Dale visits on Monday. Littlestown picked up a big win against Division IV powerhouse Delone Catholic last Monday and won a 16-0 game against Biglerville on Wednesday. The Rams have only two losses against divisional opponents and certainly would like to make up some ground in the standings.
