York Suburban continued its run of District 3 Class AA dominance, winning its third straight district title by placing five runners in the top-15 spots on Saturday.

Trojans senior Donovan Mears led the way by placing fifth with a time of 16 minutes, 16 seconds, which was 17 seconds behind district champion Jack Di Cintio of Wyommising.

Freshman Jarrett Raudenski and sophomore Bryce Ohl placed eighth and ninth, respectively.

"The way this team came together, time-wise, is great," York Suburban coach Ron Herman said. "Nobody had a bad race, everybody ran well."

The Trojans, who only have two seniors on their roster, looked experienced on the hilly Big Spring High School course, a promising sign as they look to defend their Class AA state title next week in Hershey on another difficult course.

"We trained specifically for hilly courses because we knew this was gonna be hilly and we knew states would be hilly," Herman said. "It clearly worked. We were as prepared as we were gonna get, and next week we just need to be even more prepared."

Neither Herman nor his runners have spent time studying the state-wide competition, but they expect to contend for another championship.

"I think we have the ability, it's just whether or not we perform," Mears said.

Filler repeats as District 3 Class AA runner-up

Gettysburg senior Dan Filler led for much of the District 3 Class AA boys' race, but he never managed to put as much distance between himself and Di Cintio as he planned.

So when Di Cintio started a serious burst in the final 200 meters, Filler couldn't do anything but watch as the Wyomissing senior raced past him and beat him by six seconds. Filler crossed the finish line shaking his head, frustrated after finishing as the district runner-up for the second year in a row.

"I definitely think I could've gotten first," Filler said. "I kind of gave up on myself a little bit coming in at the end. Jack's kick was pretty heavy and I'm not much of a kicker. Coming in the last couple meters, I just didn't have it."

But Filler doesn't feel discouraged heading into next week's state meet.

"I'm still looking to get a win at states," he said. "I think I have the health to do it, but it's just gonna be about getting the mental component down. Training can only do so much and I can't really train much more than I did this summer and this season. It's all gonna be mental from here on out."

Greene finishes as District 3 Class A runner-up

Delone Catholic senior Will Greene ran a similar race to Filler earlier in the day, leading the District 3 Class A boys' race at the two-mile mark but ultimately coming up six second shy of a district title.

Camp Hill's Cooper Leslie passed Greene in the homestretch, leaving Greene with a runner-up medal.

"I don't know what happened, my energy started going down and Cooper managed to slip away from me," Greene said. "I could have won, but that just wasn't God's will. All I know is I gave it my all and I got beat. Props to Cooper, he ran a really good race. I'm still going to states and I still have the opportunity for a state medal."

Greene finished in 16:27, his best time of the year.

"He wanted to win. It didn't happen, but he ran his fastest time of the season," Delone Catholic coach R.C. Zinn said. "He did the best he possibly could do and that's all anyone can ask for."

Bermudian Springs' Long squeaks into states

Bermudian Springs sophomore Chad Long sat on the ground, too exhausted to stand up when he heard his name blare over the loudspeaker.

Although he had just missed a top-20 medal in the District 3 Class AA race - he placed 21st - his name sounded on the list of runners advancing to next week's state meet. Long smiled and the good news gave him the energy to stand up as teammates and parents congratulated him.

"It's amazing," Long said. "It's something I worked toward all season and it was just fantastic to be able to do that."

Long is the first Eagles' runner to qualify for states since Rachel Krane in 2013.

"I'm real proud of him and I'm real proud of the team," Bermudian Springs coach John Wardle said. "He had a lot of good support. It just brings a nice conclusion to our season and hopefully he'll continue to do well."

Biglerville's Daniel Wood was the only other runner in that race to earn state qualification without earning a medal. He did so by placing five seconds behind Long in 22nd place.
