Gettysburg, Central York boys leave no doubt in YAIAA soccer semifinal wins

Gettysburg's Connor Weikert scored 33 seconds into the match and the Warriors were never seriously threatened in their 5-1 victory against Biglerville in YAIAA boys' soccer semifinal action Tuesday night at Papermakers Stadium in Spring Grove.

After the Warriors started with possession, Adam Yingling played a long ball to the right corner that midfielder Alex Cowden ran down, earning him a corner.

Following the corner, Weikert cleaned up the mess in front of the net, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 39:27 to go in the opening half.

"We try to get the ball into the opponent's half of the field as quick as possible to try to create chances to score," Gettysburg co-head coach Ian Hancock said. "Alex did a great job of working hard to get that corner for us."

The win sets up a championship tilt with Central York, a 5-1 winner over Susquehannock, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Susquehannock

"We're excited for the chance to play Central," Hancock said. "It would be nice to beat a great team and win a championship for doing it. Big picture, though, it'll be a good opportunity for us to see what we need to fix heading into districts."

Biglerville (13-7) kept the Warriors' high-powered offense in check for the next 33 minutes before junior striker Matt Yingling got loose and converted a goal with 6:53 left in the first half.

Yingling lost his defender again right before halftime and made the Canners pay once more when he scored unassisted with 23 seconds left in the half.

"It was a weird start with them scoring so quick," Biglerville head coach Jebb Nelson said. "We switched some stuff up and slowed them down for awhile. But Yingling is so hard to stop with the speed that he has."

Gettysburg (18-0) upped its advantage to 4-0 when Yingling banged a shot off Biglerville keeper Mitchell Thomas. Drew Wivell finished it with 36:55 left in the match, bringing on the Warriors' parade of substitutes that saw every healthy player wearing a maroon jersey get on the field.

Biglerville avoided the shutout when Gettysburg gave up an own goal with 5:01 remaining. And that snapped Gettysburg's 12-match shutout streak which lasted more than 1,000 consecutive minutes.

Gettysburg has now allowed five goals this season with the Canners being credited for two of them.

"We know that Biglerville loves to face us and they really get up for us," Gettysburg co-captain Drew Riggle said. "They went crazy when they scored tonight and we were up four goals at the time. So knowing how up they get up for us kept us focused on tonight and not looking ahead."

Jeremy Allinger wrapped up the scoring when Chris Kemp set him up with 3:38 to go.

The Warriors had a 14-3 edge in shots on goal and an 8-3 advantage in corners.
