Central's Yvonne Peters-Washington into District 3 tennis semifinals
HERSHEY >> Central York's Yvonne Peters-Washington is attempting to repeat as a district tennis champion — in a different district.
Peters-Washington moved to within two steps of doing so at Saturday's opening day of action at the District 3 singles tournament at Hershey Racquet Club.
The State College High School transfer captured District 6 gold last fall. She won the Class AAA title in the YAIAA tournament in both singles and doubles for the Panthers last week. Now comes her hardest test since arriving at Central York last spring.
Peters-Washington, the No. 3 seed, will take on No. 2-seeded Ali Snyder of Exeter in Monday's semifinal. Sammi Snyder, the bracket's top seed and Ali's younger sister, will take on Taylor Capoferri of Lampeter-Strasburg in the other Class AAA semifinal.
"The players are good here, a little smarter," Peters-Washington said. "They're well-versed in how to play the game.
"My goal is to definitely win it. But my biggest goal is to get to states. They take three here (from District 3), and I'll do everything to try to get there."
Peters-Washington was feeling under the weather on Saturday, she said, and needed three sets to take out Manheim Township's Kate Moore, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, in her quarterfinal match.
"Kate's a good player, she handles shots really well," Peters-Washington said after the match. "But I'm also not feeling my best right now. I'm on NyQuil. Took some time just to keep my head in the game. Going to go home and rest."
Peters-Washington dispatched Manheim Township's Julia Darkey in her first-round match, 6-4, 6-4.
The rest of the York-Adams field was not as successful Saturday in Hershey. Of the six other York-Adams entrants, only Kennard-Dale's Alyssa Miller won a first-round match — and she had to take out a league mate to do it. Miller beat Delone Catholic's Alyssa Neudecker, 6-3, 6-0, in the Class AA first round.
Miller then bowed out in the Class AA quarterfinals to top-seeded Lin Robertson of Berks Catholic, 6-0, 6-0. Bermudian Springs' Brooke Yurick lost to Robertson, 6-0, 6-0.
In Class AAA, New Oxford's Dagney Markle was beaten, 6-0, 6-0, by Sammi Snyder in the first round; Northeastern's Laura Zielinski lost to Capoferri, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, and Christie Friedrich of Dallastown was dropped by Lower Dauphin's Jordan Schaefer, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
