Lippy leads Susquehannock past Bermudian Springs in YAIAA tournament

Upstart Bermudian Springs showed it belonged in the YAIAA tournament, but ultimately ended up losing to mainstay Susquehannock in a competitive first round game Saturday.

The Eagles, playing into noticeable wind in a chilly first half, exchanged runs up and down the field with the Warriors, making just one mistake as Susquehannock senior Kaleb Lippy broke through the defense and scored to put his team up 1-0 late in the half.

With the wind at its back in the second half, Bermudian Springs controlled the ball for much of the half, but couldn't get past a staunch Susquehannock defense in a 2-0 loss. The Warriors dropped an extra defender into the backfield in the second half to effectively protect the lead and defend against the wind.

"They've got three or four really good attacking players, so when they get the ball forward, they're coming at you," Susquehannock coach Brett Maxwell said. "I thought our defense did a nice job, but they're one of the better attacking teams we've seen throughout the year."

Lippy provided the Warriors' second goal with a successful penalty kick in the 78th minute.

Susquehannock advances to face Central York in the YAIAA semifinals on Tuesday, but also remains focused on districts.

"We're here, so we're out to win a county title," Maxwell said. "But the priority is districts, that's where you want to end the season on a high note."

Bermudian Springs also turns its attention toward districts after competing against a fellow team ranked toward the top of the District 3 Class AA power rankings.

"We're a program on the rise, we haven't been here year after year after year yet," Zerfing said. "We want to get to that point, but it's a great experience for the guys. Overall I think we held as good as can be expected. Sometimes it takes a bounce or two, or a slip or something like that. We a had slip in the first half and they capitalized on that."
