Runners from Delone, York Suburban, Gettysburg, Kennard-Dale excel at Ben Bloser Invitational


Cross country athletes from the YAIAA put forth a dominant performance Saturday at Big Spring's 20th annual Ben Bloser Invitational in Newville.

A pair of perennial powers led the local charge as the Delone Catholic girls in Class A and the York Suburban boys in Class AA claimed team championships.

And YAIAA runners claimed overall victories in three of the six classifications: Delone's Will Greene (Class A), Gettysburg's Dan Filler (Class AA) and Kennard-Dale's Maddie Ferner (class AA).

Delone's Greene finished in 16 minutes, 42.67 seconds, nearly eight seconds ahead of the runner-up, to help the boys' team finish second overall. Teammate John Mall finished 12th.

On the girls' side in Class A, Leanne Sneeringer finished second in 20:29.19 to lead Delone to the team title. She finished less than three seconds ahead of Christian School of York's Nicole Shelton. The Squirettes' team championship also featured Alyssa Alberghini's sixth-place finish, and Taylor Lesscalleet was 10th.

The York Catholic girls took second in the team standings, led by Megan Hale's 13th place showing.

In Class AA, Gettysburg's Filler won his race by more than 10 seconds, finishing in 16:14.09.

York Suburban's team championship was paced by No. 4 finisher Donovan Mears (16:29.99). Peter Wagner, Jarrett Raudensky and Bryce Ohl finished in a pack to claim eighth through 10th.

Kennard-Dale's Ferner won the girls' race in 19:01.55, beating Eastern York's Maddie McLain by almost nine seconds. York Suburban's Olivia Gettle was fourth, and West York's Bethany Weaver was seventh. Kennard-Dale's Caitlin Salomon was 10th.

The Suburban girls placed third in the team standings.
