Central York overpowers South Western, stays unbeaten in Division I boys' soccer

With first place in YAIAA Division I on the line, Central York and South Western both entered Monday's boys' soccer match undefeated in division play.

The Panthers emerged from the match still unbeaten in the division as they breezed past the Mustangs, 4-1, at South Western.

Central (7-1, 4-0) controlled the match from start to finish, particularly in the first half when about 80 percent of the play came in South Western's end of the field. For the match, the Panthers held a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 13-0 edge in corners.

"We were pretty well prepared today," Central head coach Frank Lenno said. "We connected with multiple combinations early, but couldn't finish the chances we were creating."

South Western keeper Matt Maher stood tall in net in the early going as he weathered a barrage of Panther shots. Maher turned aside Pierce Miller's try with 33:05 to go in the opening half, stopped Jared Wagner's header with 30:44 to play and Igor Gomes' shot at the 26:36 mark.

Michael Tolley beat Maher near post on a shot from 12 yards out on the right side with 26:22 left in the first half. But Maher denied four more shot attempts in the first half to keep his team in it, as the hosts trailed 1-0 at intermission.

"Matt did a good job in goal for us today," South Western head coach Clayton Wilcox said. "Our effort was good and we played hard today. Central is a very good team that's well-coached and they kept giving themselves chances to score. If you do that, eventually you will score."

Central quickly increased its lead early in the second half when Gomes set up a Jared Hileman goal with 36:48 remaining in the match. Gomes had the ball in the center before passing to Hileman on the right, and Hileman's shot blazed past Maher into the left side of the net.

Gomes scored just over five minutes later to make it 3-0. Carter Luckenbaugh set that up marker with a long throw-in that Gomes volleyed in off one bounce with 31:32 to play.

"We kept the pressure on and created a lot of chances," Lenno said. "We made them defend all game long, and I think that wore them down."

South Western (5-2, 3-1) avoided the shutout when Jeremy Oglevee stuck a penalty kick with 13:40 to play.

"Today is a tough result, but Central is a great team," Wilcox said. "We scrimmaged Gettysburg, and Central and Gettysburg are the two best teams that I've seen in this league so far this year. That could change before the end of the year, but right now, they're the top two teams that I've seen."

Central's Carter Mummert capped the scoring when he scored off his rebound with 3:20 left in the match.

Both teams return to the pitch Tuesday when South Western plays at Red Lion at 4 p.m. and Central York hosts Dallastown at 7 p.m.
