In what may be its toughest Division III test of the season, Delone Catholic (4-0) made quick work of Bermudian Springs (1-1) on the road in a game between two teams that came in undefeated.

The Squirretes swept the Eagles 25-13, 25-14, 25-17.

Although the result — a sweep — was the same as both times these two teams met last year, Bermudian Springs coach Mike Beachy saw some big differences in the way his team competed.

"They tend to always jump on us early," Beachy said of the Squirettes. "I was trying to slow it down as much as I could because when we slow it down and get in more of a rythym, we can stay in it. That was the strategy."

The strategy worked effectively in the second and third games. Bermudian Springs overcame a 4-0 deficit to take an 8-5 lead in the second before ultimately falling behind. In the third, the Eagles and Squirettes went back-and-forth until Delone took a 15-10 lead and pulled away.

"We had a couple runs and stayed in it at different points," Beachy said. "Their athleticism didn't bother us as much as it did last year, for whatever reason, maybe it was because Mady (Whitcomb) had some blocks early on that affected them a little bit. All things considered, I thought we played pretty well."

Whitcomb led the Eagles with seven kills, and fellow captain Gabby Emeigh led with eight assists.

"Mady and Gabby are two of the best players in all of the (YAIAA)," Jason Leppo said. "They're good kids, they're hard workers and they're super talented. They both do a lot of really good things and it's always a challenge to deal with those two."

Sarah Senft led the Squirettes with nine kills, while Lilly Singleton added six kills and Katie Laughman led with 26 assists.
