Gettysburg's Yingling knocks in game-winner against West York

With a little less than nine minutes left in regulation Tuesday, Gettysburg's Matt Yingling received a yellow card and took a seat on the bench for a little bit. While there, Yingling received a pep talk from the Warrior coaching staff.

Then, a little more than a minute into overtime, Yingling popped in the game-winning goal as Gettysburg defeated West York, 1-0, in YAIAA Division II boys' soccer action at Gettysburg.

"I grabbed a drink of water, took a breather and coach (Scott and Ian Hancock) talked to me a little bit about keeping my head and staying calm," Yingling said.

The game-winner came with 8:56 left in the first overtime when Yingling cleaned up after Connor Weikert's shot was deflected by Bulldog keeper Darian McCauley. McCauley went to the ground to deny Weikert and was unable to recover in time as Yingling finished into the open net.

"Jake Wilhelm hit a low cross to Connor, and he took a shot that got blocked," Yingling said. "I was able to get to it, and put it away. That's the best moment of my high school soccer career, so far."

"We knew they were coming for us, and that this would be a fight."

The two sides have met four times now since Gettysburg joined YAIAA Division II last year with the Warriors winning all four matches, 1-0 — three of them in overtime.

"They're a super organized team," said Ian Hancock, Gettysburg's co-head coach. "They have new coaches and do some things different than last year. But they're a tough team to deal with."

Neither team mustered a shot on goal until Gettysburg's Adam Yingling took a rip with 14:32 left in the first half only to see McCauley make a diving deflection.

Gettysburg (3-0, 1-0 YAIAA II) had multiple chances on set pieces throughout the game, but every time the Warriors got a shot to the goal frame, McCauley was up to the task to keep the match scoreless.

"Their keeper is so good," Hancock said. "He's a stud in net, and you have to be perfect on set pieces to beat him."

Eddy Rodriguez had two promising chances to score for the Bulldogs, but rang the left post with 8:08 left in the first half and was then denied on a direct kick from 30 yards out with 30:12 left in regulation.

The kick was deflected over top of the net by Gettysburg keeper Yanni Tassou.

"I thought Eddy had one on that direct," West York head coach Brent Duffy said. "Their keeper made a tremendous play to knock that over, and I don't know how he did it."

Less than 20 seconds before Yingling's winner, Kenton Meckley had a chance to win the match for the visitors but his header off a corner was denied by Tassou.

Gettysburg held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-3 edge in corners.

"We had some video of them and knew that they were very good at combination plays," Duffy said. "We stayed in our defensive shape extremely well and had to, or they would've picked us apart."
