Ravaughn Dillard performed his best on the biggest stage.
The Gettysburg sophomore posted his best triple of jump of the season on his final attempt of the season, leaping 47 feet, 11 inches at the PIAA championships at Shippensburg University. The jump tied the Warriors' school record and earned him the state championship, the only state title won by any YAIAA track and field athlete this season.
That gold medal, which came after he placed fourth at the District 3 championships a week earlier, capped a season that also included a YAIAA triple jump title and his team winning the league's Division II championship with a perfect 7-0 record.
Vote for GameTimePA.com Spring Athlete of the Year
Your team had so much success this year, particularly in field events. What makes you different from other teams in the area?
We had a lot of seniors and juniors, which really helped. We're not really uptight, and that helps a lot with our state of mind.
Now that you've won a state championship, how does it change the way you feel about the rest of your high school track career? Is there more pressure to do well now?
I want to do better and keep striving for gold. I want to break the school record and the state record (50 feet, 5 inches).
There were a lot of seniors on your team this season. Which teammate are you going to miss most and why?
Probably Nate Sharrah. He's always funny, making me smile in practice.
You're a pretty good basketball player, too. Which sport do you like more, basketball or track?
It's close. They're pretty even right now. I used to like basketball a lot more until this year.
What changed?
I got gold.
You didn't start competing in track and field until your freshman year. What made you try out?
I was looking for something to do in the spring. I'm a pretty good athlete, and I had a lot of friends doing it, so I thought I might as well.
