Gettysburg hitters power Warriors to victory

Every Gettysburg hitter that head coach Max Laing sent to the plate collected at least one hit in the Warriors' 15-0 four-inning victory against Hanover in softball action Wednesday afternoon at Gettysburg.

The Warriors, who were coming off a 14-4 loss to Central York on Tuesday, recorded 17 hits and scored in all four innings.

"We played well for a while against Central York, but it didn't happen for us (Tuesday)," Laing said. "You just put that behind you and start over the next game. They all start 0-0, so you don't want to let things carry over."

Warriors pitcher Madelyn Yannetti worked around a one-out double in the top of the first by Emily Albright to keep the contest scoreless before the Gettysburg's bats went to work.

An RBI double from Taylor Mummert, a run-scoring single from Alexis Kennedy and an RBI groundout by Bri Crushong plated three runs for the Warriors in the bottom of the first.

Then Gettysburg sent 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second and tacked on six more runs with Yannetti and Kennedy each smacking two-run doubles. Crushong and Dalyce Kump each hit run-scoring doubles. All six of the runs came after there were two outs in the inning.

"Our two-out hitting was great today," Laing said. "Our pitch selection has been good this year. We're swinging at good pitches and letting the bad ones go by."

Yannetti knocked in the Warriors' only run of the third when she doubled home Kaitlin Martin. Then all seven Warriors that batted in the fourth recorded a hit as Yannetti and Mummert doubled home runs with Mummert's two-bagger bringing on the mercy-rule ending.

Gettysburg (4-2) received three hits from Yannetti, all doubles, and three hits from Martin. The Warriors also got two hits apiece from Mummert, both doubles, Kennedy and Kump. The Warriors finished with eight doubles.

Yannetti earned her fourth win of the campaign with four shutout innings, where she allowed three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She threw 39 of her 53 pitches for strikes.

Both squads return to division play with road contests at 4:15 p.m. Thursday. The Warriors play at West York, while the Hawkettes play at Fairfield. It will be the fourth straight day with a game for Gettysburg and the third straight day with a game for Hanover.
