District soccer roundup: Susky rolls Red Land


The Susquehannock boys' soccer team scored five goals in the first half and cruised to a 7-1 win against Red Land in the first round of the District 3 Class 3A tournament Monday night. 

The Warriors' Zach Buchanan opened scoring with 36:21 remaining in the first half before Jason Weger scored five minutes later to make it 2-0. Alex Kettinger scored at the midway point of the first half, and Weger and Colton Mumley each scored in the final three minutes of the half to make it 5-0.

Buchanan added his second goal 10 minutes into the second half, and Greyson Murray scored with just under six minutes left to make it 7-0 Warriors. Red Land's Jake Speicher broke up the shutout with 2:45 left.

No. 2 Susquehannock will face No. 7 seed Fleetwood in Thursday's quarterfinal at a site and time to be announced.

Girls' soccer

CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS

York Catholic 6, Harrisburg Christian 2: A year after advancing to the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals, the Fighting Irish started the 2016 district postseason on the right foot with a quarterfinal victory at home Monday. 

York Catholic got on the board four minutes in with a MaCayla Welsh goal off a Melanie Matthews assist. Paige Phillips doubled that advantage at the midway point of the half, and Welsh and Matthews scored within two minutes of each other to make it 4-0. Harrisburg Christian cut the deficit to 4-1 with five minutes to play in the half.

Courtney Nattans pushed the lead to 5-1 in the second half, and Welsh finished off a hat trick with 22 minutes to play to make it 6-1. Anna Cardillo scored for Harrisburg Christian with five minutes to play to close out the scoring.

York Catholic will meet No. 7 seed Camp Hill in Thursday's semifinal round at a site and time to be announced.

Fairfield 11, Lancaster Country Day 3: The Green Knights cruised into the tournament semifinals in a match that set a District 3 record for most goals scored in a girls' soccer playoff game. The 14 combined goals broke the record of 13 goals, set in ELCO's 12-1 victory against Christian School of York in the 2008 Class 2A preliminary round. 

Top-seeded Fairfield advances to the semifinal against No. 4 Tulpehocken at a time and place to be determined.

CLASS 3A FIRST ROUND

Hershey 4, Susquehannock 1: The No. 8 Warriors saw their season end in a loss to No. 9 Hershey. Susquehannock ends its season with a 12-4-2 record.

Lower Dauphin 8, Dover 0: The Eagles' season ended with a shutout loss to top-seeded Lower Dauphin.
