Spring Grove golfers go head-to-head

The final two qualifying spots for the PIAA East Regional in Class 3A were up for grabs at the end of Saturday's District 3 individual golf tournament. After 18 holes of competition, four golfers were locked in a four-way playoff for a opportunity to advance.

Participating in the playoff were Logan Hess from Penn Manor, Campbell Wolf from Cumberland Valley, and both Mason Staub and Luke Hoffnagle from Spring Grove. The four players rotated around holes 1 and 9 at Briarwood East Golf Course until the two spots were filled.

The first spot was claimed by Wolf, who birdied the second playoff hole. Hess dropped out after recording a bogey on the next hole, leaving the two teammates and best friends from Spring Grove to duke it out for the final spot.

When the pair came around to play the 9th hole for the third time in the playoff, Hoffnagle pulled away with the win.

"It's like a movie," Hoffnagle said afterwards. "I'd rather us both go and beat someone I don't know."

Staub will still accompany Hoffnagle to the regional tournament at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood as an alternate and could compete if any of the players ahead of him are forced to scratch.
