Central York golfers Minkin, Lee add YAIAA individual titles to their medal haul

Central York's Gus Minkin and Julianne Lee have found some gold on the Briarwood East Golf Course links the past two days.

A day after Minkin and Lee helped the Panthers win the YAIAA team championship there, the two captured the boys' and girls' crowns Thursday during the YAIAA individual golf championships.

Minkin shot a 2-under-par 70 to claim the boys' individual title by a shot over Dallastown's Blake Sebring and Eastern York's Zach Dixon, both juniors. Sebring defeated Dixon in a one-hole playoff for the second-place medal.

"I played pretty solid," said Minkin, a senior who last year finished outside the top 10 but qualified for the District 3 Class AAA field. "I didn't get myself into trouble. I only made one bogey. I was able to hit a lot of greens."

Lee carded a 4-over-par 74 to win the girls' championship by two shots over Alexandra Lowder of Eastern York. Kendel Adams of Susquehannock finished third at 7-over 77.

Despite the cool, rainy and at times windy conditions, both Minkin and Lee improved their rounds in the individual championships from the team event a day before, when Minkin shot 74 and Lee finished at 79.

"It's more of a mental grind (under Thursday's weather conditions)," Minkin said. "When it's sunny, you're just out there playing, having fun and not thinking about it as much."

Minkin began his round on the fourth hole in the shotgun start format. He shot 2-under on the front nine thanks to birdies on holes 3 and 4. He also birdied the par-5, 494-yard 17th on the back nine.

The senior picked up a bogey on the par-4 11th for his only plus hole of the round.

"I missed the green again (on 18), that is always a tough hole for me," Minkin said. "I feel like I always bogey that hole. I hit it to within eight feet then and made the putt to keep me and Zach tied at that point. That was big."

Sebring shot 1-over on the font nine, but birdies on 11, 14 and 15 propelled him to a 2-under 33 on the back.

"I made putts of 25-plus feet on 9, 10 and 11," Sebring said. "Everything was going in. My putting was on."

Playing in the same threesome as Minkin, Dixon went 1-under on the front nine and played even on the back.

"Conditions were a little tough, but I putted pretty well," Dixon said. "I'm pretty happy with my round. On the second hole, I went a little left and hit the cart path and ended up in a bush. I ended up with a bogey on that hole. I had been at 2-under at that point. I was able to rally back. I parred the next hole."

Kevin Crumbling of Eastern York placed fourth, two shots behind Minkin.

"I didn't putt the greatest," said Crumbling, a senior. "I had three three-putts (Thursday). All in all, I played pretty well for the conditions. I tried to keep the ball low, so the wind didn't play with it."

Lee birdied the par-4 first and sixth holes on the front nine to go with bogeys on the par-4 fourth and seventh holes to finish even there. The sophomore birdied the par-4, 12th, but bogeyed Nos. 10, 13 and 16 and double-bogeyed the par-3, 14th on the back nine.

"I played okay on the front nine," said Lee, who tied for third in last year's event. "I wasn't as happy with how I played on the back nine."

Lee, Lowder and Adams will be joined by six other female YAIAA qualifiers for the District 3 championships next week at Briarwood East.

Minkin leads a field of 17 YAIAA boys golfers from Class AAA into next week's district field. Six golfers qualified for the Class AA event.
