The West York girls' volleyball team lost a slugfest against Palmyra, 3-2, on Thursday night in a District 3 Class 3A semifinal at Dallastown High School. The Cougars earned a 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-12 victory.

Despite the loss, West York is still heading to the PIAA tournament, as the top four teams in the bracket qualify for the state competition. The Bulldogs will face York Suburban in the consolation round at 5 p.m. Saturday at Central York in a game played for seeding purposes. Coach Joe Ramp said the match will be played at either Dallastown or Central York.

Thursday’s contest was highly entertaining, with each team exchanging sets, points and dramatic rallies throughout. Both benches were animated, and the Bulldogs’ crowd and student section were raucous.

West York earned a 3-0 victory when the teams played earlier this season, but Ramp said that was a morning match and the Cougars came out sluggish that day. That wasn't the case Thursday night.

West York was led by Abbey James’ 45 assists and 14 digs. Trilby Kite had 18 digs for the Bulldogs while Marisa Krinock posted 19 kills.

DISTRICT 3 SEMIFINALS

Class 2A

York Catholic 3, Trinity 1: It’s on to the district title match for the Fighting Irish, who knocked off Trinity, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-10, at Dallastown High School to earn a spot in Saturday's Class 2A final.

York Catholic won the 1A championship last year, but the team bumped up a classification in 2016 as part of the statewide realignment.

“It helps a lot,” head coach Phil Autrey said of his team's experience. “We’ve been here. … Single-A, Double-A, it doesn’t matter. The girls felt comfortable. They’ve experienced this before.”

Abby Pilke had 14 kills for York Catholic, while Elizabeth Johnson added seven and Rachel Shelley six. Megan Daugherty had 21 assists and McKenna Walker recorded 22 digs for the Irish.

York Catholic will face rival Delone Catholic in the district championship game Saturday at Dallastown.

Delone Catholic 3, Lancaster Mennonite 0: The Squirettes advanced to their fifth straight District 3 Class 2A championship appearance thanks to Thursday's 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 victory at Central York.

Delone will take on YAIAA Division III foe York Catholic for the title, which is likely a welcome change for the Squirettes. The past two seasons, they've finished runner-up to Berks Catholic, which is in its first season competing in Class 3A after the PIAA expanded the classification system.

The championship game is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Dallastown.
