Delone knocked out of tourney; West York wins in 5

It has been a long time since the Delone Catholic girls' volleyball team didn't get through the first day of the YAIAA tournament.

The Squirettes had won the past four tourney titles in addition to the past seven Division III championships.

"I've been at Delone about 10 years and I can't remember it happening," said Delone Catholic coach Jason Leppo. "Maybe in my first year. It's been a long time."

But Monday evening at Dallastown, Delone Catholic ran into a York Suburban team seeking some payback from recent years.

"There is a lot of pent up feelings about us over there through the years," Leppo said. "If it was not for Delone Catholic, York Suburban would likely have a few more banners. I'm sure it was something their girls were fired up for."

The Trojans stunned the Squirettes by sweeping their quarterfinal, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14, and moving on to Tuesday night's semifinals.

York Suburban (12-5) will face Division I co-champ Central York (12-3) at 6 p.m. at Dallastown High School. The Panthers swept York Catholic on Monday, 25-13, 25-18, 25-10, to advance.

"It was nice to get a win and get into that rhythm," said Central York coach Nate Ocasio.

The winners of tomorrow's 6 p.m. semis will play at 7:30 at Dallastown High School for the championship.

The Trojans rallied from four down and broke a 14-all tie in the first game on the way to a 25-19 win.

Delone Catholic (15-3) twice led by five early in the second game, but the Trojans battled back. The two teams were tied at 17-all before an 8-5 run by York Suburban iced the game.

York Suburban again came back from three down early in the third game to knot the score at 10-all. It was all the Trojans from there and senior outside hitter Miranda Kauffman's kill ended the match.

Kauffman topped the team with 11 kills while junior Ali Reinecker added 10. Senior setter Georgia Dumars contributed 31 assists.

Red Lion sweeps into semis, West York wins in 5

Back in late September, the Susquehannock girls' volleyball team took YAIAA Division I co-champ Red Lion to five games.

The Lions did not give Susquehannock an opportunity to do that a second time as it swept the Warriors, 25-13, 25-19, 25-17, in one of Monday's early quarterfinals.

"I think our mindset was different for this one," said Red Lion coach Heather Schoemaker. "We focused on the serving and receiving aspects of the game and, once we did that, we were able to get our jobs done."

Red Lion (16-2) will take on Division II champ West York (20-1), which needed five games to dispatch Dallastown, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13, on Monday. The game is set for 6 p.m. at Dallastown's middle school.

"I told the girls they were in for a rude awakening coming in to play these Division I teams," said West York coach Joe Ramp. "We've been a little stagnant lately. They learned the hard way (on Monday) and maybe this was our wake-up call."

The Lions won six of the opening eight points in securing a 25-13 win in the first game.

Up 11-9 in the second game, Red Lion reeled off eight straight points and held on for a 25-19 win.

The last game was similar to the second as the Lions broke away their 11-8 lead with a 7-2 run on the way to a 25-17 win and the sweep.

Red Lion got a team-high 10 kills each from senior outside hitters Lauren Enfield and Lindsey Blevins. Senior middle hitter Logan Dontell added a team-best five aces.
