Delone's Neudecker pulls upset in district tennis

Delone Catholic's Ellie Neudecker knocked off second-seeded Catherine Maher of Berks Catholic to reach the semifinals of the District 3 Class 2A tennis tournament on Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.

Neudecker, who won the YAIAA Class 2A championship last week, is the lone York-Adams player still in contention in the district semifinals.

Neudecker beat Biglerville's Morgan Orndorff in straight sets to open the tournament. In the quarterfinals, Maher rebounded from a 7-5 first-set loss with a resounding 6-1 victory in the second set. But Neudecker rallied back in the third set to secure a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 victory.

Maher reached the quarterfinals by rolling past York Suburban's Liv Pindzola, 6-0, 6-1.

The unseeded Neudecker will take on another seeded player in the semis: Wyomissing's Alexandra Jadic. The semifinals begin at 1 p.m. with the championship match to follow.

In Class 3A action, YAIAA champ Dagney Markle of New Oxford bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing in straight sets to second-seeded Taylor Kopan of Manheim Township. Markle was the only York-Adams player to survive the first round: Dallastown's Christie Friedrich and Central York's Maddy Mummert both lost in straight sets.
