Delone sends 3 to YAIAA singles quarterfinals

The top three seeded tennis players in both Class 2A and 3A survived the first day of the YAIAA singles tournament Thursday as the field was cut from a combined 57 players to 16.

A total of four seeded players were knocked out of the early rounds of the tournament, two from each class. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set to begin at 2 p.m. Friday at South Western, with the championships and third-place matches at 9 a.m. Saturday at the same location.

The Class 2A quarterfinals will feature three Delone Catholic players.

The bracket's top three seeds — Brooke Yurick of Bermudian Springs, Alyssa Neudecker of Delone Catholic and Morgan Orndorff of Biglerville — received first-round byes and then won in straight sets. None of them dropped more than three total games in their second-round victories.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were No. 4 Liv Pindzola of York Suburban, No. 5 Ellie Neudecker of Delone and Kennard-Dale's Brooke Siebert, the No. 8 seed who dropped just one game in her two victories.

West York's sixth-seeded Lydia Fairlamb fell in straight sets in the first round to Delone's Maria Waminal, who became the third Squirette to reach the quarters. Kennard-Dale's Brianna Miller, the No. 7 seed, was upset in the second round, falling to York Suburban's Samantha Clancy, 7-5, 6-2.

Meanwhile, the Class 3A bracket saw Central York, Dallastown and New Oxford send two players apiece into the quarterfinals, with the top six seeded players all advancing.

The top two seeds — New Oxford's Dagney Markle and Dallastown's Christie Friedrich — received first-round byes and cruised to second-round victories.

After winning her first-round match in straight sets, Central York's Maddy Mummert had to battle to a three-set victory in order to reach the quarterfinals, earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win against New Oxford's Kamdyn Balko.

Dallastown's Madi Reed, South Western's Michaela Sentz and Dover's Alex DiGiovannia also advanced to the quarters with a pair of straight-set victories Thursday.

Seventh-seeded Jessica McDonald of Susquehannock was knocked out of the first round by New Oxford's Brooke Moyer, 7-5, 6-3, and Dallastown's Morgan Kistler, the No. 8 seed, fell to Central's Kara Holland in the second round, 6-3, 6-4.
