Spring Grove to host Melanoma Awareness Night

The Spring Grove girls' soccer team will host its second annual Melanoma Awareness Night this Thursday during its home game against Red Lion at Papermakers Stadium. The event will honor former Rockets soccer player Victoria Swiger, who graduated last spring and has been battling melanoma since the age of 13.

The varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m., but the fundraiser will begin at 4 p.m. with the JV contest. All money raised from the event will go to the Spring Grove Mini-THON. Last year, fans and players wore black T-shirts at the game, since black is the color of melanoma awareness.

A four-year member of the Spring Grove soccer team, Swiger played her entire freshman season while receiving interferon injections to fight her illness. While the injections worked, the cancer returned halfway through Swiger's junior year and she decided to become an assistant coach as a senior following successful surgery.

The team hosted its first Melanoma Awareness Night last year against New Oxford, and Swiger played for the only time that season during the game's first minute. It was also the only time she appeared on the field with her sister, then-freshman Catherine Swiger.
