Dover rallies past Waynesboro in PKs in District 3 girls' soccer play-in game

WAYNESBORO >> After erasing a two-goal halftime deficit, the Dover girls' soccer team beat Waynesboro on penalty kicks Friday in the preliminary round of the District 3 Class AAA tournament.

The 17th-seeded Eagles tied the score at 2-2, before edging the No. 16 Maidens 4-1 in penalty kicks.

Dover will travel to No. 1 seed Cumberland Valley for a first-round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"Waynesboro came out strong with two quick goals and we were chasing the game," Eagles coach Bret Altimore said. "It took us a while, but when we got the equalizer the game evened out and I thought we started doing what we wanted to do."

Waynesboro (12-4-2) dominated the first half in all aspects, playing the majority of the time on the Dover (11-2-3) side of the field. The Eagles mustered only one shot on goal in the half.

Waynesboro racked up seven shots, connecting on two of them.

After a save by Dover keeper Tori Wantz, junior Cat Weber collected a rebound and sent the ball into the net.

The second goal came right before the half on a beautiful cross from freshman Skylar Lambert to senior Katie Clawson, and the Maidens went into the half with a two-goal lead.

"I thought the first half was just a phenomenal effort, execution with passing and pressure, and I felt like we took their best player out of the game completely," Waynesboro coach Brian Fisher said.

But the second half was a completely different story. Dover senior Brooke Firestone scored eight minutes into the half and reignited the Eagles offense.

Dover flipped the script, taking eight shots on goal and holding Waynesboro to only one.

Sophomore Libby McKeever scored the equalizer with four minutes remaining in regulation.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to a shootout.

Dover's Wantz stopped two of the Maidens' kicks, while Payton Miller, Maddy Miller, Cierra Malehorn and Firestone all connected on their shots for Dover.

"Right there I just tell them, 'Just give it your best shot. Don't worry about missing, just don't hold back. Go out and have fun and live in the moment,'" Altimore said.
