Northeastern outlasts Susquehannock in marathon YAIAA tournament win

Gabby Versace laid the ball down for her penalty kick, took two steps back, and with no hesitation, stepped back up and launched the ball into the corner of the net.

The Northeastern sophomore's goal put an end to a YAIAA tournament game that took more than two hours to complete, as the Bobcats needed two overtimes and seven rounds of penalty kicks to come away with a victory over Susquehannock on Saturday.

Aside from a three-minute stretch in the second half in which Emily Landis scored to put the Warriors ahead and Abby Osborn answered back for the Bobcats, the two teams played scoreless soccer in regulation time. Both offenses remained quiet in 30 minutes of sudden-victory overtime, prompting penalty kicks to determine which team would advance to the YAIAA semifinals.

Even the typical five rounds of penalty kicks weren't enough to decide the game, as both teams made four out of the first five kicks. Both teams scored again in the sixth round, before Susquehannock missed to start the seventh round with a shot that went over the net. That's when Versace confidently stepped up and scored the winner.

Northeastern faces the winner of the Dallastown-Fairfield quarterfinal game in the league semifinals on Tuesday. The Bobcats lost to the Wildcats once and tied them once during the regular season, and did not face the Knights.

"I'm certainly happy we get to move on, but I'm not happy in our execution," Northeastern coach Diana Collier said of the marathon win. "Our expectation is to win in the 80 minutes of time we're given. I don't even like going into overtime. Our players didn't play at the highest level, I'm a little disappointed, but the good news is we did enough to get by and we can fix that for the next game."
