After qualifying for the District 3 tournament for the second straight season, the Red Lion girls' lacrosse team is looking to make a deeper run this spring.

The Lions feature four starting seniors who have provided leadership this season, and head coach Sam Grey is excited about the large eighth-grade class that will be freshmen next season.

Grey pointed out Alyssa Adams' senior leadership as a big factor in the team's success this year.

"Alyssa commands excellence and it definitely can catch on," Grey said.

Offensively, Red Lion is led by Peyton Shima and Sara Simms. Grey also spoke highly of Emily Harrington's versatility and Mackenzie Ehrbaker's defensive skills.

As for the district tournament, the team was eliminated in the first round last season in a 14-4 loss to Wilson.

"We are hoping to make it further this season," Grey said.

No. 11-seeded Red Lion opens District 3 Class 3A play at No. 6 seed Hempfield at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

This year, the Lions finished with a 9-7 overall record and went 7-5 in the league. That placed them in a three-way tie for the fourth spot in the YAIAA tournament, although South Western took the final berth.

"(This year) we dropped a couple of early games that we shouldn't have and it kind of put us in a bad position for the remainder of the season," Red Lion head coach Sam Grey said. "We kind of played catch up the rest of the season. Last year, we lost two games that we shouldn't have lost, and it definitely has an effect on your district rankings and you don't want to have to play catch up."

Here's a look at the other YAIAA teams that qualified for the tournament, according to the final District 3 power rankings that published online Thursday afternoon. The first round begins Monday for the girls and Tuesday for the boys. Matchups and game sites were released Thursday evening.
