Dover, New Oxford, West York roll into states

The YAIAA went 4-for-4 in the District 3 Class 5A girls' basketball tournament first round on Tuesday, with Susquehannock, New Oxford, Dover and West York all advancing to the quarterfinals.

All eight also earned berths in the state tournament, where the top eight teams advance.

Ninth-seeded West York (16-7) ended Greencastle-Antrim's season with a 43-38 decision at Greencastle-Antrim High School.

"You have to tip your hat to them, they beat us twice," Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. "They rebounded well and really shot well at the beginning and came out more ready to play."

On Dec. 28, the Bulldogs outscored the Blue Devils 31-5 in the second half of a 52-24 victory. For awhile it looked like this game would go the same way. Eighth-seeded Greencastle (18-6) took a 2-1 lead on a Jenay Faulkner layup with 6:24 to go in the first quarter. The Blue Devils didn't score again until another Faulkner layup more than nine minutes later, as West York opened up a 14-2 lead in the second quarter.

"We were getting the ball inside well but then they started to neutralize that," West York coach Darrell Wildasin said. "After that we needed to kick it back out but we didn't really see the people who were open."

Freshman Makenna Hoffman finished with a team-high 10 points.

"My freshman really came through tonight for us," Wildasin said. "For a young team like us that kind of performance was huge."

Third-seeded New Oxford (20-6) earned a 59-43 victory against No. 14 Muhlenberg (14-9). The YAIAA runner-up Colonials will host No. 6 Twin Valley (19-5) in Friday's quarterfinals. Twin Valley beat No. 11 Palmyra (13-10) by a score of 50-46 on Tuesday.

Seventh-seeded Dover earned a third matchup this season with Susquehannock. Dover (18-6) beat No. 10 Fleetwood (18-6), 56-44, in Tuesday's opener. Susquehannock (20-3) beat Dover both times they played this season.
