Roundup: Eastern York girls open year with tournament title
The Eastern York girls' basketball team got the Brad Weaver era started on the right foot, winning the Spring Grove tip-off tournament by knocking off Carlisle 55-36 on Saturday.
Weaver, who's in his first year coaching girls' basketball at Eastern, admitted being nervous in his debut Friday night and added his team had some pre-game jitters as well. With that being said, the Golden Knights stayed collected to knock off Spring Grove 43-37, then recorded the 19-point win over Carlisle on Saturday to claim the crown.
"This team is very young," Weaver said. "We have some freshmen and a lot of sophomores. But we kept it together."
He then added about Saturday's victory: "Not only did we win, we won by 19 points. Considering how early in the season it is, it was surprising how well they played and executed the gameplan."
Cassidy Arnold scored 19 points in Saturday's win and was named tournament MVP. Hannah Myers, who was named to the All-Tournament first team, added 14 points in the title contest.
The Golden Knights will take the floor again Tuesday at Northeastern.
West York tournament
West York 54, Bishop McDevitt 53: The Bulldogs continued their hot start to the season by downing Bishop McDevitt for the tournament title.
Makenna Hoffman led the way for West York with 15 points. Catie McCarty had 12 and Alayna Harris added 11. Angie Hawkins also had nine for West York, which won 54-12 over William Penn in Friday's first round game.
Olivia Fasik scored a game-high 23 points to lead Bishop McDevitt.
Elizabethtown tournament
Susquehannock 59, Elizabethtown 42: The Warriors built a 12-point lead at halftime and held Elizabethtown at bay from there in the tournament championship game.
Susquehannock's full court press gave Elizabethtown trouble and the Warriors also rebounded the ball well, according to head coach Dave Schreiner.
Tyler Williams was tournament MVP for Susquehannock while Jaden Walker was named to the All-Tournament team.
Camp Hill tournament
Delone Catholic 64, Halifax 17: One day after head coach Gerry Eckenrode recorded his 400th career victory, the Squirettes kept the good times rolling in Saturday’s championship game with a lopsided win over Halifax.
Brady Zumbrum led Delone Catholic with 12 points in the title game victory. Elise Knoblouch added 10 and Jill Novak put in eight of her own. The Squirettes jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and led 30-4 at intermission.
Novak took home tournament MVP honors while Knoblouch was named to the All-Tournament team.
Camp Hill tournament
Delone Catholic 64, Halifax 17: One day after head coach Gerry Eckenrode recorded his 400th career victory, the Squirettes kept the good times rolling in Saturday’s championship game with a lopsided win over Halifax.
Brady Zumbrum led Delone Catholic with 12 points in the title game victory. Elise Knoblouch added 10 and Jill Novak put in eight of her own. The Squirettes jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and led 30-4 at intermission.
Novak took home tournament MVP honors while Knoblouch was named to the All-Tournament team.
Penn Manor tournament
Lampeter-Strasburg 56, Central York 50 (OT): The Panthers got off to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter, but saw their advantage slip away in the Penn Manor tip-off tournament championship.
According to Panthers coach Scott Wisner, forwards Nikson Valencik and Teirra Preston were in foul trouble and wing Allison Wagner missed the second half with an injured ankle.
The Panthers shot the ball poorly, Wisner added, and needed a 3-point field goal from Emma Saxton at the end of regulation to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Central York went on the get outscored 10-4 in the extra frame.
Preston was named to the all-tournament team.
Conestoga Christian tournament
Christian School of York 31, Salem Christian 27: The Crusaders overcame a 9-1 first quarter deficit to win the Cougar Classic for the second year in a row.
Kathryn Larson hit two free throws to tie the game in the final minute and Kendis Butler hit the game-winning free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining in the contest.
Mekenzie Smith led CSY with 12 points.
