Perkiomen Valley ends Red Lion's season

Perkiomen Valley jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter and held off Red Lion in the first round of the PIAA Class AAAA girls' basketball tournament at Wissahickon High School in Ambler.

The District 1 champion, Perkiomen opened the game with a 23-point first quarter.

"We got behind the eight ball in the first quarter," Red Lion coach Don Dimoff said. "We did a lot of good things tonight, unfortunately we didn't score as much as we needed to."

Red Lion (25-6) kept cutting into the early lead Perkiomen Valley (26-2) had built, but every time Red Lion closed within single digits Perkiomen recovered with another offensive spurt. Red Lion outscored Perkiomen Valley, 17-11, in the fourth quarter.

"We just could not get over the hump," Dimoff said.

Courtney Dimoff and Hannah Wolf each had 12 points to lead the Lions, while Amy Maciejewski added 11. The Lions went 7-for-7 from the line, but Perkiomen sank 16-of-20 free throws.

Perkiomen's Katherine Armstrong led all scorers with 16 points and Hanan Richmond added 15.

Red Lion won the YAIAA Division I title in the regular season before taking home the league tournament.

Perkiomen, however, is just one of seven District 1 teams to advance to the second round of the girls' Class AAAA tournament.

"I'm proud of the way we fought the entire game," Coach Dimoff said.
