Late York Catholic surge derails Bodine

It took a little over three quarters, but York Catholic finally pulled away from Bodine as the Fighting Irish downed the Ambassadors, 53-42, in opening-round action of the PIAA Class AA girls' basketball tournament Friday night at Dallastown.

York Catholic (21-6) moves on to the second round where it will tangle with District 2 champion Holy Redeemer, a 55-32 victor against Southern Columbia, on Tuesday at a time and site to be announced.

The Irish, who saw their 10-year run as District 3 champions end this postseason, were playing for the first time since Feb 25. Meanwhile, Bodine hadn't played since Feb 16.

York Catholic held a 35-32 edge after three quarters before opening the final stanza with a 14-0 run that finally put the game out of reach. Kate Bauhof keyed the deciding run with nine of her game-high 34 points.

"We had a week of practice leading up to this game, and coach (Kevin Bankos) had us working on our shooting a lot," Bauhof said. "We've played in this gym twice before this season, so that probably helped, too."

Bauhof, a sophomore, canned 11-of-23 from the field and made 9-of-16 from beyond the arc.

"When you face a team that has a shooter as hot as Bauhof was, it's tough to beat them," Bodine head coach Michael Schieber said. "They started to pull away when we had to expand our defense and start chasing the ball."

Bodine (16-7) kept the contest tight by capitalizing on its athleticism and owning a 47-34 edge in rebounding.

"We knew coming in that they were an athletic team," Bankos said. "We stressed rebounding, but obviously, that didn't happen. It was good to face a team like them because we haven't seen a team that athletic in awhile."

Neither team could score until Bauhof's triple with 5:04 left in the opening frame, a stanza that ended with the Irish holding an 11-7 lead.

Bodine battled back to take an 18-16 lead on Tiana Garvin's bucket with 1:31 left in the half, but Bauhof's personal 11-0 run in the final 69 seconds of the half staked York Catholic to a 27-18 halftime lead.

"My teammates do a great job of setting screens to get me open shots," Bauhof said. "It's definitely a team effort."

Garvin paced the Ambassadors with 18 points and 15 boards.

"I'm proud of our effort and I'm sure, even though they're disappointed that they lost, the girls are too," Schieber said. "(York Catholic) is a very good team and we gave them a competitive game."
