Bauhof scores 40 in York Catholic rivalry win

All three play NCAA Division I college basketball right now, and all three put on memorable performances in past renditions of the York Catholic vs. Delone Catholic rivalry.
It's time to add Kate Bauhof to that list.
The Fighting Irish sophomore isn't going to Division I anytime soon — she's still has two-and-a-half years left of high school — but she put on show that will be remembered in this rivalry for many years, scoring 40 points in her team's 64-50 win Friday night. She did all that while coughing and gasping for air during every break as she continued to get back into shape a week after missing games with pneumonia,
“I just tried to use the breaks and foul shots as time to breathe," Bauhof said. "Obviously you don’t want to come out in a close game. I just kept pushing through. It’s hard, but it’s worth it.”
Bauhof was held to single digit scoring in the first meeting against the Squirettes earlier this season, which York Catholic lost 53-49 in overtime. This time around, she scored four 3-pointers, knocked down 14 free throws and took over the game in a dominant third quarter to give the Fighting Irish a 15-point lead heading into the final period.
“I thought we didn’t do a very good job of helping on screens they set for her," Delone Catholic coach Gerry Eckenrode said. "The bottom line is they played better, they deserved to win the game. We missed way too many foul shots, especially front ends of 1-and-1s right as we were coming back.”
Riley Vingsen and Ally Shipley led Delone Catholic with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Squirettes allowed the Fighting Irish to go on a 14-3 run early in the second quarter, with nine of those points scored by Bauhof, and played from behind the rest of the game.
“Part of it is we had some other kids making some shots early, then they had to worry about those kids," York Catholic coach Kevin Bankos said. "When we get Kate one-on-one with a lot of people and we can set some screens that work, that makes a big difference. We stood around a little bit at the beginning of the year and tried to watch her play, but now I think everybody’s figuring out their role on the team and know that they can score if they have the opportunity.”
York Catholic and Delone Catholic end divisional play as co-Division III champions since each team went undefeated with the exception of a single loss to the other. A coin flip will determine what seed each team will get in next week's YAIAA tournament.
In addition to being for a division title, Friday's game was also the first For The Kids Points Challenge, a Fox43 fundraiser to raise money for the Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. The game will be expanded to include other rivalry basketball games in the area starting next season.
The final amount of money raised by each school, based on pledges during the week and the number of points scored by each team in the game, was $8,600 by Delone Catholic and $6,500 by York Catholic, according to an announcement at the end of the game.
