Susquenita wins Hanover tournament title

A day after knocking down seven 3-pointers, Hanover's shooting went cold in the Republican Club of Hanover Holiday Tournament title game.

The Hawkettes walked off their home court with a second-place trophy after falling to Susquenita, 45-25, in Tuesday night's championship game.

After hitting three 3-pointers Monday night, Kelsey Staub started Tuesday right where she left off with a long ball on Hanover's first possession. But that turned out to be the only 3-pointer of the game, as the Hawkettes' attack went cold and they were shut out by the Blackhawks in the second quarter. The night before, Staub's teammate Emma Bell hit four 3s.

“I was so concerned about their 3-point shooters when I saw last night," Susquenita coach Shannon Dyer said. "Our key was to keep their 3-point shooters out of rhythm and not be able to sit in their shot and shoot.”

Hanover junior Lexi Daley, who scored a team-high 10 points, scored six straight to start the third quarter before Susquenita pulled away for good. The Blackhawks' Amber Siegfried, who was named the player of the tournament, scored a game-high 14, and Katie Humphrey, a member of the all-tournament team, added 12. Hanover's Daley and Bell also were named to the all-tournament team.

“I know we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be in the second quarter," Hanover coach Denny Garman said. "I thought in the third quarter we came out with some efficiency and knocked down some buckets. We made them miss, but we gave some offensive rebounds. You make them miss and you want to reward yourself by going back on offense, but they got some putbacks.”

The Hawkettes seemingly can't avoid giving up offensive rebounds this season as their tallest players recover from injuries. The team's three seniors, who are also three of their five tallest players, have missed time this season and didn't play in Tuesday's loss. Twin sisters Soukaina and Zaynah Tracy are both sidelined for the season with a knee and foot injury, respectively, while Madeline Hammond remains out with a concussion but should return soon.

"This was the first game where we were bigger than the other team," Dyer said of his team. “I didn’t know a lot about Hanover, but I thought they were coached very well. I think they run the right stuff, they’re just undersized. But I think (Garman) is getting the most out of his kids, they play hard.”
