Bobcats can't overcome lackluster start

In the second half, the Northeastern girls' basketball team came to life in its Bobcat Holiday Tournament title game against West Perry.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it was too little too late, as the Mustangs held on for a 39-27 victory on Tuesday night.

"Unfortunately the first 16 minutes counted as much as the last 16 minutes," Bobcats head coach Dennis Kloster said.

In the first half, the Bobcats scored just six points and were held scoreless in the second quarter. They also were 0-of-16 from the field in the first two quarters.

In the second half, Northeastern (4-6) posted 21 points and shot 7-of-20.

"They seem to think they have a switch they can flip on and off," coach Kloster said. "I've told them from the start, we are just not that good (to do that). When we stand around, we are really easy to defend."

During the final 16 minutes, the Bobcats outscored the Mustangs, 21-14. For the game, the home team also won the turnover battle, 16-13.

Playing solid defense has been a point of emphasis for Kloster since he took over for Gary Sutton.

"I've been trying to change the identity of the team. I dont think we've ever been as good defensively as our individual talents say we should," he said. "Our goal is to keep teams in the 30's."

West Perry was led by Gracie Stauffer's 14 points and 10 rebounds. Stauffer also was named the tournament MVP.

Jordyn Kloster hit the first Northeastern field goal with six minutes to play in the third quarter and led all scorers with 20 points. She and Kendra Meyer were named to the all-tournament team.

Elizabethtown beat Columbia, 53-38, to claim third place in the tournament.
