Gary Sutton resigns as Northeastern girls coach

Veteran head coach says he'll likely retire from coaching due to health concerns

Gary Sutton has resigned as Northeastern's head girls' varsity basketball coach, according to athletic director Bryan Stephens.

Stephens said Sutton stepped down last Wednesday because of health concerns.

"It kind of crept up on him," Stephens said. "I wish him the best."

The veteran coach said he has likely coached his final game, indicating during a Tuesday phone interview that he might step away completely from the game of basketball.

"I think I'm probably retired from coaching for good," he said.

Sutton said the physical toll of the job was beginning to be too much and believes that the right assistant coaches are in place for him to step aside.

Varsity assistant coach Dennis Kloster, who is the father of senior Jordyn Kloster, will take over the reins of the varsity team. The Bobcats travel to Kennard-Dale on Tuesday for a 7:30 tip-off. The team holds a 2-4 overall record this season and a 1-3 mark in YAIAA Division I play.

A graduate of Northeastern High School, Sutton is a longtime radio personality in the York community. He served as an assistant coach in Susquehannock before he earned his first head coaching job at Columbia, where he led the team to the Class AA boys' state championship in 1987.

Sutton left the program following that season and took over the Susquehannock boys' team. He returned to Columbia as the girls' head basketball coach in 2009, coaching three seasons before stepping down following the 2011-12 season. He also held assistant positions with the Northeastern boys' basketball team, Red Lion girls' basketball team and Division I Towson University.

He became active in the girls' basketball scene when his daughter, Suzi, played at Dallastown. Sutton helped found the travel teams York Unity and Lady Keystone.
