New Oxford girls earn first D-I win

The New Oxford Colonials still consider themselves a contender in YAIAA Division I even though they entered the week without a win in the division.

Kaelyn Long and Co. put a checkmark in that box with a dominating first-half effort in a 67-43 win against William Penn on Tuesday night.

"It's definitely been a little adjustment this year to say the least," Long said. "We have a new system, new coach, and no seniors, but that definitely doesn't define us as a contender."

Long led the way with 21 points against the Bearcats (3-3, 0-3), but it was the New Oxford defense that stole the show.

The Colonials (2-3, 1-2) held William Penn to 0-of-15 shooting in the first quarter, and held star guard Chyna Steele to just two points in the first half.

"Defense wins games, and last year we had a strong defensive season," Long said. "We're keeping the focus on being the toughest defensive team in Division I, and the first quarter shutout proves we are in it to win it."

The Bearcats only point of the first quarter came on a free throw by Jasmine Beistline.

After that, New Oxford closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run.

"(New Oxford) was pushing us up-tempo and making us shoot bad shots," William Penn head coach Larry Corbin Jr. said. "We weren't taking the time on the offensive end. We like the up-tempo, but we have to make good decisions."

New Oxford, meanwhile, made good decisions, and made them quickly.

Breane Sauter fed Haley Luckabaugh for a layup to make it 6-1 midway through the first.

After a defensive stop, Presley Berryhill ran the floor and bounced a pass to Long at the backdoor for two more points.

Sauter dished out assists on all three buckets in the rest of the quarter. She kicked out for Berryhill's jumper in transition, and led Luckabaugh to the tin in the open court with 20 seconds left in the period.

Sauter scored six points while adding six rebounds and eight assists.

The bench unit came in and was equally effective. Freshman Daelyn Stabler recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

"I think it feels good," New Oxford head coach James Kunkle said of his first YAIAA Division I win. "We had two really tough teams to start league play, and hopefully now we can start cruising and getting into playing the way we want to."
